about

One-Eleven Heavy is a short opera that probes the relationship of humans to air travel through the tragedy of the 1998 Swissair Flight 111 disaster in Halifax, Canada. It was written in response to the incredibly terrifying mix of emotions the composer experienced being aboard an American Airlines jet in 2013 which lost an engine mid-flight. “We were shown how to brace for landing and find the closest emergency exit. The cabin went silent; what can you do? What is there to do? What and who do you think about?”

Told in reverse chronology, the libretto is culled from recollections of reporters on the scene of the Swissair crash, interviews with family members of the victims, and newspaper accounts of the incident, as well as descriptions of plane crashes from survivors of other disasters. These stories are interwoven with the original Air Traffic Control recordings and use of authentic aircraft alarm audio.

Originally for piano, soprano, and baritone, One-Eleven Heavy was workshopped and premiered with Opera From Scratch (Halifax, Nova Scotia) in 2014 and afterward expanded, orchestrated, and recorded as a conceptual “opera EP album” with ensemble Hotel Elefant and featuring soprano Jenny Ribeiro and Grammy Award-winning tenor Karim Sulayman. The album was released by Navona Records on CD and all streaming platforms in May of 2019.
